07 July 2021 Current Affairs:According to a policy document issued by the National Mission for Clean Ganga, cities located on river banks should include river conservation plans in their Master Plans.
Currently, the recommendations are for towns along the Ganga's main stem. There are 97 towns spread across five states, including Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal.
Highlights:
♦ Clarifying the issue of land ownership, imposing restrictions on the Floor Area Ratio, increasing green cover near the river by establishing green buffers, removing concrete structures, and implementing green infrastructure.
♦ Enabling the use of cutting-edge river management technologies, such as satellite-based water quality monitoring, big data for river health monitoring, and drones and artificial intelligence (AI) for riverine biodiversity and floodplain mapping.
About National Mission for Clean Ganga(NMCG):
♦ The National Ganga Council, also known as the National Council for River Ganga Rejuvenation, Protection, and Management, was established in 2016. It took over from the National River Ganga Basin Authority (NRGBA).
♦ The NGRBA was established in accordance with the provisions of the Environment (Protection) Act (EPA) of 1986.
♦ The National Ganges Council, chaired by the Prime Minister, is fully responsible for overseeing the pollution prevention and rehabilitation of the Ganges River Basin and its tributaries.
♦ The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) is the national Ganga Council's implementation arm.
♦ In 2011, NMCG was registered as a society under the Societies Registration Act 1860.
