06 July 2021 Current Affairs:The Ministry of Women and Child Development is seeking feedback and suggestions on the Trafficking in Persons (Prevention, Care, and Rehabilitation) Bill, 2021.

Highlights:
♦ The bill's goal is to prevent and combat human trafficking, particularly of women and children, to provide victims with care, protection, and rehabilitation while respecting their rights and creating a supportive legal, economic, and social environment for them, and to ensure that offenders are prosecuted.
♦ The bill proposes harsh penalties for offenders, such as hefty fines and the seizure of their property.
♦ The draft bill calls for harsh penalties for offences categorised as aggravated forms of human trafficking.

Provisions of the bill:
♦ A person found guilty of trafficking faces a minimum sentence of seven years in prison, which can be increased to ten years.
♦ The provisions will apply to any offence of human trafficking with cross-border implications.
♦ Those convicted will also face a fine ranging from one lakh to five lakh rupees.
♦ It will also allow the convicts' properties, which were purchased with money obtained from trafficking, to be forfeited.
