ZyCov-D Vaccine - National Drug Regulatory Agency

ZyCov-D was created with the assistance of the Department of Biotechnology and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

05 July 2021 Current Affairs:Zydus Cadila has decided to apply to the national drug regulatory agency, the Central Drug Standards Control Organization, for emergency use authorization for its Covid-19 vaccine ZyCov-D.

About ZyCov-D
♦ ZyCov-D is a vaccine based on “plasmid DNA.”.
♦ It is a vaccine that employs a genetically modified, non-replicating version of a DNA molecule known as a plasmid.
♦ In this case, the plasmids are coded with instructions for producing the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein.
♦ Vaccination gives the code to the cells in the recipient's body so they can begin to make the spiked outer layer of the virus.
♦ It is expected that the immune system will recognise this as a threat and develop antibodies in response.
♦ Another unique feature of the vaccine is the way it is administered. No needles are used-instead, a spring-driven device uses the injection as a narrow, precise flow of fluid that penetrates the skin.
♦ ZyCov-D was created with the assistance of the Department of Biotechnology and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
